Feminism- the true essence.

Sheen Madan

The ideology of Feminism is a movement initiated in the 19th century, speaking out for Women’s rights on the grounds of equality of sexes.

The movement is distinctly divided into four waves. The first wave was the wave of movements that led to the voting rights for women. The second wave began during the civil liberty movement of the 1960s.

The third wave focused on individuality and personal liberty and was against the constricted Feminism of the upper class and to make the way for black Feminism and interracial Feminism.

The fourth and most recent movement is focused on addressing sexual harassment and rape cases.

Why is feminism important today?

Today, violence against women is still a big issue across the world. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, about 137 women are killed by either husbands or family members across the world every day. Another shocking statistic shows that as of 2016, four cases of rape are reported in the nation every hour. Violence against women of the LGBTQ+ community is still present across the world with women facing increased rates of sexual and physical violence compared to their heterosexual counterparts. It is important to note that all forms of violence against women are underreported worldwide, and thus, it is likely that any statistics are higher in reality.

Feminism is, therefore, vital in today’s society.
